Amlodipine contains the active ingredient amlodipine, which belongs to a group of medicines called calcium blockers. Please note that the doctor may have prescribed the medicine for a different use and/or with a different dosage than stated in the package insert. Always follow your doctor's prescription as stated on the pharmacy label. Amlodipine is used to treat high blood pressure ( hypertension ) or a special type of chest pain called angina , including a rare form called Prinzmetal's or variant angina. In patients with high blood pressure, the medicine works by widening the blood vessels, so that blood passes more easily through them. In patients with angina , Amlodipine works by improving the blood supply to the heart muscle, which thereby receives more oxygen so that chest pain is prevented. The medicine does not provide immediate relief of chest pain from angina .
Always use this medicine as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Contact a doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure. The recommended starting dose is 5 mg Amlodipine once daily. The dose can be increased to 10 mg Amlodipine once a day. The medicine can be taken before or after food and drink. You should take this medicine at the same time each day with a glass of water. Do not take Amlodipine with grapefruit juice.
